I have been playing around with the idea of using hyperadobe building method rather than earthbags for a few months now but I am facing a supply problem. Hyperadobe is a building method that is a relatively recent find by alternative builders. As a constuction method it is similar to earthbags that I have described but the retaining material for the soil is different. Instead of slippery poly bags, hyperadobe uses a strong mesh tubing similar to what is used in produce packaging for onions or potatoes or erosion control booms. The tubing is filled with soil and tamped down solid just like earthbags but each course has greater adhesion to the course below due to the mesh openings. The dirt becomes a monolithic structure and achieves great stability with less effort. The most appropriate tubing material in the US that I have found is called Raschel Mesh or Leno Mesh. The Leno Mesh is pictured above.

The difficulty I am facing now is where to purchase the materials. Since the material is so thin and lightweight it comes in lengths between 1000' to 3000' which is more than enough to build one cabin of the size that I am planning. However, most manufacturers of these types of tubes will only deal in large quantities like shipping containers or skids. And the few suppliers that I have found are imposing a huge markup on the products. For example, a manufacturer of erosion control booms in Canada lists the product at $300 - $350 per roll, while their supplier wants double that.

If you have any leads on where I might purchase the type of material pictured or listed above please leave me a clue in the comments. Thanks!

The best deal I've been able to find is from bag supplies Canada. Shipping is expensive to the U.S. Still, you can get a 3000 foot roll for under $600. Good luck

I need to order 2 rolls, but the price reflected on your website is way above that $277. Is that a price change or mistake?

Jon, Good Morning.

Thanks for bringing the price to my attention. I just checked, and the sale price of $100 off the Hyperadobe rolls was in-fact expired. I've gone ahead and re-applied the sale price, so you are good for $277.00 with free shipping for 2023 within the continental USA. Admittedly, I've let the development of the website slip through the cracks. There are still plenty of rolls in stock for your order.

What I've been developing aside from the website is an adobe home that will conform to the International Residential Code as close as possible. It's looking like an engineering stamp is required for anything outside of the scope of these requirements. So... conforming to the IRC and the NMAC (New Mexico Adobe Code) is of the utmost importance. A licensed state engineer, meanwhile, must still be consulted. I find that the codes aren't terribly restrictive, and will ensure a builder can construct a dwelling that is safe and habitable. There's actually a section of the IBC (Chapter 2109.3) about using adobe masonry, but this refers to the traditional brick laying method. Find it here: https://codes.iccsafe.org/s/CBC2018V2/chapter-21-masonry/CBC2016V2-Ch21-Sec2109.3

As you may know, most people in the USA are going the route of building Hyperadobe sheds within the allowable size without permitting; which are anywhere from 120sqft to 200sqft on average. I'm developing detail drawings that will progress the Hydperadobe method into something viable for those like myself who intend to construct a permitted and habitable dwelling. At this rate, I'm about a year away from consulting an engineer to confirm and wet stamp my drawings.

Pouring an adobe brick as a layer with the Hyperadobe method, rather than manufacturing adobe bricks and using mortar, is just so much more appealing. Also, in my own opinion, the rammed earth method comes as close second, and Superadobe in third place. While using Hyperadobe, you don't need to use forms as if pouring concrete walls. Also, the raschel mesh naturally helps add a lateral stabilizing effect between each layer and there is no barbed wire to rip your Superadobe bags. I imagine we will still want to add a lateral reinforcement approximately 3 to 4 vertical feet between layers, but this will more closely resemble the material used within Concrete Masonry Units (CMU). I'm also thinking about a method for stabilizing the walls using bond beams and rebar. If anyone has ideas, I'm all ears.

Stay tuned for more, I'll be working in the spring on a "beehive" Hyperadobe shed with a dome for light which will eventually become a chicken coop. There will eventually be more content to reflect this on my site as well. Busy busy.

Best Regards,
Lachlan

If it is hard to order in small quantities, why not gather a few people together to cover all costs and divide the materials accordingly. I realize this is a few years old. Has this become any easier to find/order..etc?

Me too! I’ve been researching all the Earthbag methods/styles and keep circling back to the hyperadobe method. I live in western Canada and will be ready to break ground in Baja Mexico next year. Yes, sourcing out a decent supply seems to be a bit tricky. Any tips greatly appreciated.

I would like to respond to LACHLAN post. Do not be fooled. Please read below:

1)What they are selling is an imported product from China. It is made from 100% recycled HDPE material. Using 100% recycled material, is a bad thing. As a person who has traveled extensively in china and visited dozen of Raschel knitting manufactures, 100% recycle material is weaker and does not have the strength as a product that uses 100% virgin HDPE material as Volm Companies does.

2)Volm Companies has a 5 year UV warranty on all their outdoor products, including Hyper Adobe Tube Netting. Our product has UV additive that will not breakdown the mesh in the harsh sun environment. I do not know of an import mesh that has the same quality and UV protection guarantee as Volm Companies.

3)Our Hyper adobe mesh is made from a 3E knitted construction. We developed this heavier more robust construction when we started manufacturing the product two years ago. All imported Hyper Adobe Tube Mesh is a lighter weight, less strong 2E knitted Construction. This will cause more "blow outs" and tears in the mesh during the filling and tapping down process.

Volm Companies has been manufacturing knitted products at our Antigo, Wisconsin plant for over 35 years. We are a privately own, third generation company that produces high quality products at a fair market price. Volm Companies builds relationships with their customer and are not in it for a single sale. Please log on to our website and check out our mission statement and get to know who Volm Companies is.

Hi, I just figured out that you can click the name of the poster to enter their website, but just to make it clear we are offering rolls for a $100 discount with free shipping in the continental USA @ https://www.Down2EarthAdobe.us you may also call me at 719-225-2664

I've received a phone call from Jonathan from TinyShinyHome to not embed their videos on the website because of a partnership with Volm. I've complied with his request and found him to be a friendly guy just like in his videos (much more friendly than the email I received from Bob @ Volm Companies). Just to be clear, a YouTube video can be embedded on a website and comply with all copyright and fair use laws in the United States. But I have respectfully complied with the request.

I too appreciate domestic manufacturing, and I'm sure Volm has a great product. But if you want to order a material that is a recycled material with UV protection instead of using virgin plastics, and a product that is at a better price point, please consider ordering from our website. The product we supply is fine, and there's nothing wrong with it.

After all, we're end users just like yourself who want to build sustainable and for less. Plus we're friendly folks who would love to help you in your build.
